ALWAYS HAVE CASH!!!!

I would when we are traveling in other countries we want to leave the country with as little as foreign currency as possible. This is not a good idea! First always bring and keep US dollars in a pinch you often use US dollars in other countries. Why I say this is important is that you might have an unexpected cost going to or at the airport and your debt card is not accepted in that country (or simply does not work). Scary!!
I know from experience! When I was traveling in Fuji my first overseas trip ever! (I will blame it on being young this time ) I am leaving the airport and fine out there is an airport tax to fly out of the airport. I cannot leave the airport if I do not pay this fee. I had 10 dollars of foreign money to my name. Not enough! My debt card does not work! Yikes! I am now going to be stuck in this small middle of now where country with no money and no ticket out of there! I do get lucky a trekker Irishmen does not want to see me fret over this small tax he pays the tax in full. Not asking for a thing in return! I beg for his address to send him the money, which he finally gave it to me.
Long story short keep cash, debt card and credit card with you! Never only one type of card because some places do not accept certain cards. Or better yet you cannot read the ATM screen to understand what the screen is asking.
Travel is getting easier. I suggest doing as much research you can before traveling.
