This past summer here on Long Island there was major threats of a massive, large and powerful Atlantic hurricane that would leave extensive flooding and wind damage along its path. Hurricane Irene in the end caused widespread destruction and at least 56 deaths; monetary losses in the Caribbean were estimated to be as high as US$3.1 billion. Early damage estimates throughout the United States range from US$10 to US$15 billion.
The whole week before we heard reports that Irene was coming our way. It was so hard to decide what was the best plan of action. Stay put? Board everything Up? Leave town? But to where?
How bad is it going to be? Is Irene going to be something I can later say I lived through?
Is going to be another Katrina event here in the Hamptons? This sparks the question what would you bring with you if you had to pick up and leave? Packing my emergency bag I had the important documents, canned food, toothbrush, flashlight, money and of course my passport! Wouldn't leave home with out it! The funny thing I had to laugh at my self for was my sewing machine! I would be so devastated if I lost it. I have, tvs, dvd players, and art work that costs so much more money, but to lose my sewing machine would be so detrimental to the core. So this is what bring about my question.
What can you not live without?

Did you know that Bras were originally meant to flatten?
Did you know that Bras were originally meant to flatten?
This is true... The first bra was patented in the USA in 1914 out of two handkerchiefs and a narrow ribbon. Until the mid 1920's brassieres, as they were called, were boneless and designed to flatten the bust and push it downwards. This style was widely adopted during the 1920's when fashionable at-home dresses also known to us as the cocktail dress were often made of revealing semi- transparent fabrics. Over the years different forms did come into the design structure such as "boned", different sizes, shapes and styles.
The "push-up bra" was not designed until 1964 and did not gain wide popularity until 1994.

How about instead of taxing, taxing, taxing... We Start Making Jobs!
In 2008, New York enacted a measure that requires many large online retailers to begin collecting sales taxes on purchases shipped to the state, even if they have no operations or employees there.
The measure states that any online retailer that generates more than $10,000 in sales via in-state sales affiliates must collect New York sales tax. Many online retailers, including Amazon.com and Buy.com, have sales affiliates nationwide that link to the retailer's web site and are paid commission on any sales generated from their referrals. New York's measure clarifies state tax law to say that sales affiliates based in the state are representatives of the online retailer. This means that the retailer has nexus (i.e., a physical presence) in the state and is required to collect state sales taxes.
In all, more than 30 companies are covered by New York's provision. According to the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance, in the first six months since the provision became law, the state has recouped $46 million. Officials expect to recoup $68 million in FY 2009-2010.
Several other states are now considering legislation modeled on New York's.

New York Starts New Clothing Sales Tax - What do you think?
In New York, there is no state sales tax for clothing under $110 – currently only some counties do tax clothing – but that’s all going to change come Oct. 1 when the state tax on all clothing is reinstated.
The tax will last only six months and beginning on April 1, 2011, the tax will be rescinded on clothing that retails for less than $55.
The current plan is to raise the exemption level to $110 again in April of 2012
What are your thoughts on the issue?

What is the best advice you have ever received?
My Great Grandmother still saved bread bags long into her life after going through the Great Depression. We all find inspiration and insight in all kinds of places. When people complain about getting older I always think of my father's saying
“The alternative is much worse"
I always say " Life is what you make it"
On that note.

We are all blessed with amazing things in our everyday life. May it be the sand under our feet, the new born smiling up at you, a warm house to come home to or the simple fact that the sky is blue (or it is?)

what is your biggest sewing fear?
It is the time of year when we all try to find new projects and change our look with the coming of spring. We have all been there and tried to reinvent old things or create new designs only to not have it turn out as we hoped. However sometimes I find my worst mistakes turn into my favorite creations...
